Bruxism is something that affects thousands of us here in the UK, and if you want to stop grinding your teeth, Ewan Bramley Dental Care, a leading private dentist, wants to tell you how to do it with some super simple measures.
The grinding of our pearly whites is something that will, if it hasn’t already, affect most of us at some point in our lives, but when the problem becomes severe, it can have a massive impact on your oral health as well as your overall wellbeing.
Some Symptoms To Look Out For!
If you’re suffering from inflamed gums, a lack of sleep, limited movement of the mouth, migraines and earaches this could be a telltale sign that bruxism is beginning to take hold.
It’s really important, at this stage, not to ignore it and suffer in silence as it could lead to big problems such as arthritis, eating problems and a constant painful clicking of the jaw.
How can I avoid the daily grind? Let’s take a look!
Relax
Stress is up there as one of the leading causes of teeth grinding. It sounds a bit left field, but there are a host of natural methods to relieve stress such as pre-sleep meditation. But one of the best ways to beat stress is to get plenty of sleep, 7 hours a night, we think, is the ideal amount.
If you want a little help getting to sleep, a cup of chamomile before you hit the hay is a tried and tested way to do it.
Get A Mouth Guard
Most good dentists are used to people grinding their teeth and will be able to make a custom guard for you. Wearing a mouth guard while you sleep can dramatically reduce the pressure on your joints as well as the wearing of your teeth. Try to avoid purchasing a guard over the counter as it won’t match your unique mouth structure. The dentist knows best!
Cut Down On Your Alcohol Intake
Alcohol is a depressant and has been proven to make teeth grinding a lot worse. Try to limit your intake and, if you’re a regular coffee drinker, caffeine is also known to make the issue of bruxism worse.
And Don’t Forget That Caffeine!
As a known stimulant, caffeine makes it a lot harder to relax, so if you need that morning fix, consider buying chicory coffee, a coffee that is made of barley and ginseng. It tastes like coffee, will give you that morning boost, without the onslaught of caffeine.
