So, what is a dental crown?

– A crown is a covering made from porcelain, suitable for withstanding the biting and chewing forces that a normal tooth must endure.

– It is placed over a tooth to restore its shape and size, strength, and/or to improve its appearance.

– Crowns can now be created to perfectly match your surrounding teeth, making them indistinguishable from your own teeth!

When would I need a dental crown?

– A dental crown may be needed to rebuild broken or decayed teeth or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth.

– To restore a damaged, broken or severely worn down tooth.

– To cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn’t much of the tooth left.

– To secure a dental bridge in place.

– To cosmetically improve the appearance of misshaped or severely discoloured teeth.

How are dental crowns fitted and does it hurt?

– The procedure will not hurt! The preparation should feel no different from a filling.

– We will prepare the tooth so it is the ideal shape for the crown.

– Once the tooth is shaped, we will take an impression (mould) of the prepared tooth.

– The impressions will then be given to our dental technician, along with details of the shade to use and other information needed for the crown to be made.

-The dentist will fit a temporary crown so that you can use the tooth while you wait for the crown to be made (1-2 weeks).

– When you and your dentist are happy with the fit and appearance of the new crown it will be fixed in place with special dental cement or adhesive.
